Bangalore - Weekend trip - Shravanabelagola

Shravanbelgola is an important Jain pilgrim center, located 157 Kms from Bangalore. It has a 17 meters high monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali. The symmetry in stone was created around 983 AD by Chamundraya. Mahamastakabhisheka is a ceremony held once in every 12 years where the statue is anointed with milk, curds, ghee, saffron and gold coins.
Shravanabelagola is well-known for its senic beauty as well as for its religious sanctity.Some villages in te neighbourhood of Shravanabelagola like Halebelagola also contaion several Jaina temples. But the more prominent of them are the villages of Jinanathapura and Kambadahalli which contains Jaina monuments of considerable antiquity.Jinanathapura is about 1.6 Km to the north of Shravanabelagola & Kambadahalli is about a 1.5 Km to the south.
Getting to Shravanbelgola : Bangalore - Nelamangala - Kunigal - Hirisave - Shravanabelagola.
From Bangalore take Tumkur road (NH4) to reach Nelamangala (Approx 28 kms). From Nelamangala take left turn to drive along Bangalore-Mangalore highway (NH48). Kunigal town is on the way approx 46 kms from Nelamangala. Continue on the NH48 till you reach Hirisave, from here take a left turn - a state highway connects Hirisave to Shravanabelagola.

Nandi Hills is about 60 kms from Bangalore. It is also known as Nandidurga, it was one of the summer retreats of Tipu Sultan.It is a very beautiful place with nature around you at the highest level of about 1478 mtrs and about 3940 ft above sea level.On the top of the hill, there are temples dedicated to Sri Ugra Narasimha and Sri Yoga Narasimha.On the lower hill there is a temple dedicated to Sri Bhoga Narasimha.Its best if you are on top of the hill before sunrise. The wind, fog and clouds that blow towards you in the morning is just amazing.There are two roads to the top one that goes through Chikballapur and the other that goes through Doddaballapur.

The Ranganathittu Bird sanctuary is 125 km from Bangalore and 25 km away from Mysore.Six tiny islands in the river Cauvery are home to this bird sanctuary.The abundance of aquatic insects and fish in the area make it an ideal place for birds.In the year 1999-2000 the sanctuary had a record 1,400 painted storks visiting the area. Pearl Valley((Muthyala Maduvu), a popular picnic spot not too far from Bangalore.It is a beautiful sight with two waterfalls there and lots of scenic beauty. It is an hours drive from Bangalore and must be almost 40kms. Its in the periphery of Banneraghatta National Park.
